Having worked in the Fireplace Industry for the past 40 years, I have seen many fads and new product innovations come and go.  However, until the introduction of Vent Free Ventless gas fireplaces, and Direct Vent gas fireplaces, I was never able to tell my customers that their purchase would pay for itself.  Now I can.  Since all vent free appliances are 99.9% efficient and most home heating systems are only 65% to 70% efficient, I can tell our customer with a straight face that their vent free purchase will pay for itself.  Vent Free, Ventless or Direct Vent Inserts will continue to work in a power outage, heating up to 1500 square feet.  Choose a model that best suits your heating needs as well as beauty.

Most Direct Vent gas fireplace inserts are Heater Rated and have an A. F. U. E. rating*  (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency), as well as a Steady State Efficiency rating*.  All openings are sealed with Thermal or Ceramic Glass.  No interior home heat can be lost thru combustion in the Direct Vent System.  All oxygen for combustion is drawn down into the fire chamber thru the exterior pipe of a double wall venting system.  All by products of combustion are exhausted thru the interior pipe of the system.  This makes the Direct Vent fireplace an excellent alternative to wood burning fireplaces Most direct vent fireplaces will have efficiency ratings between 60 & 80%.

*A. F. U. E.:  (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) Both the on cycle and off cycle are calculated in this rating.  By including the off cycles (when the fireplace is turned off) a more accurate yearly operation cost can be estimated.

*Steady State Efficiency:  An efficiency rating that is testing only the efficiency of the fireplace when it is burning.  (Normally a higher rating than the AFUE)

All Vent Free ventless gas fireplaces are rated at 99.9% efficiency.  All vent free systems will have a mesh fixed screen or a wire draw screen.  Since all oxygen needed for combustion is drawn from the homes interior, glass can not be placed on the front of any vent-free appliance.  All vent free ventless fireplaces and gas log inserts are equipped with an ODS (Oxygen Depletion System) to insure that if the oxygen level in the home drops approximately 2% the vent free appliance will shut down.  Some manufacturers would recommend that any smoking object not be burned in the room with a vent free heater as the soot from the object (Incense, Candles, Air Freshener) can be drawn into the burner of the vent free appliance and could cause a sooting incident.

Energy prices are expected to be at record highs this winter. Did you know that?  Check out our article on Zone Heating.  Zone Heating Saves Money.  Since our Fireplaces carry some of the highest efficiency ratings in the market place, you can be sure that they will do the job when the Power is off.  Vent Free Cuts Heating Cost

Do you want to purchase a Heater rated direct vent energy efficient fireplace to keep your gas bill as low as possible? Look at our selection of High Energy Efficient Fireplaces. You will find models from the top manufacturers, including Empire, Vanguard, Napoleon, and Monessen. Did you know that you can re-direct the heat of high energy efficient fireplaces into other parts of your home? You can directly vent the heat into another room. Contact us to get more information on this great advantage and ask about the Napoleon Hot Air Distribution Kit.

Is your fireplace location on an interior wall, in a basement, in a two story installation, or any location that would prevent venting, Vent-Free heat may be the best option for your needs.  Check out our Vent Free High Efficiency Gas Fireplaces Monessen, Empire, Vanguard, and Napoleon.  The vent free fireplaces can be installed in any location that is accessible to Natural Gas or Liquid Propane.  Bedroom models are also available in vent free.

Empire Vented Ponderosa Gas Log SetAre you tired of losing heat from your home through your current wood burning fireplace? There are a few ways you can reduce the amount of heat loss from your fireplace. A simple solution is to keep your damper closed.  Vented Gas Log Inserts require a damper clamp to lock the system open.  If your gas system requires a damper clamp, you could add Glass Doors by Thermo-Rite Glass Doors thereby reducing the heat loss whether you are burning your fireplace or not.

Tired of chopping wood?  Try a set of Vent Free  / Ventless Gas Logs that are 99% energy efficient and see how much heat can really be produced from your fireplace.  The vent free gas log inserts come in many styles to compliment your homes decor and will heat even in a power outage.

Commonly Ask Fireplace Questions

What is Direct Vent?
A gas heating appliance that draws combustion air from outdoors and exhausts its combustion products to the outdoors eliminating the need for a standard chimney system.  A glass panel on the front of direct vent units is critical to keeping the combustion system sealed from the home, maintaining high efficiency and indoor air quality. A Direct Vent unit draws air through a pipe from outside the home, into a sealed firebox. Direct vents are more efficient than B-vents since they do not take any air out of your home.

What is Vent Free or Ventless?
Ventless gas heaters, ventless fireplaces, ventless fireplace inserts, ventless stoves and ventless gas log sets are heating appliances designed to be installed and operated without a chimney, flu or vent. Ventless products can be used with either natural gas or propane, and are intended to provide supplemental heat to a home. Because there is no vent, flue or chimney required, all of the heat generated by the product goes directly into the home. That's why ventless products are 99.9 percent energy efficient.

What are the benefits of ventless vent free heating products?
Ventless gas heaters, fireplaces, stoves and log sets offer homeowners a safe and energy efficient way to add heat to their homes. Ventless gas appliances use precision burners and are design-certified by national testing laboratories to meet the latest national health and safety standards and guidelines.

What is B-Vent?
A B-vent unit draws air from inside the home, through ports in the firebox itself. B vent units are generally less expensive to install, but are more sensitive to air flow inside the home (i.e.: in air tight homes other vented units such as range hoods, water heaters, and furnaces can create negative pressure pulling exhaust gases back through the b-vented appliance).

How do I add a gas fireplace to my home?
If you already have a brick or stone fireplace, or a factory-built wood burning fireplace, and you want to convert it to gas, then the most efficient solution is an insert. If you are remodeling a part of your home that never had any kind of built-in structure, then you need a pre-fabricated fireplace that does not require an existing opening or chimney. You will need to cut two holes for the fireplace, one for the vent pipe and another for the gas pipe. However, you can install a Direct Vent fireplace directly against the wall, and then use a mantel cabinet to finish. Mantel cabinets are the easy solution to quick and economical installation needs.

Can I burn wood in my gas fireplace?
Gas models are engineered specifically to burn gas, and cannot be used to burn wood.

Can I use my Vent Free unit to heat my house?
As with any new appliance in the home, the consumer must be informed on how to use it properly. All major building codes categorize vent free ventless gas fireplace and gas log products as being for supplemental use and require that a primary source of heat (e.g. a furnace) be present in the home before installation of the vent free product permit can be issued. It is clearly stated in the operating instructions of every vent free ventless appliance, as well as in informational materials distributed by manufacturers and the Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance, that vent free ventless gas products are only to be used for supplemental heating.

What type of unit should I use in my bedroom?
A direct vent virtually eliminates any chance of carbon monoxide coming into the room therefore its usually one of the best choices for a bedroom. There are some code jurisdictions that do allow a "vent free" style unit to be installed in a bedroom, but it must be below 10,000 BTU hr/gas input which usually results in poor flame aesthetics.

Can I burn L.P. (Liquid Propane) in my Natural Gas fireplace?
You need to be sure the gas hearth appliance you have is set up for the type of gas fuel you intend to burn. Conversion kits are available which will allow a unit to be changed to match the proper fuel type. They can burn one or the other, but not both. Vent free units are not convertible.

How can I control the heat output of my unit?
Most gas units are equipped with a valve adjustment that allows you to turn down the heat output by up to 50%, providing you with a wide range of heat for a wide range of temperature conditions. You can also add a remote control, or wall mounted thermostat, and then just set the controls to the desired temperature.

How do I control the blower or fan?
The blower is controlled by a dial (located on the top left-hand, or right-hand side of the faceplate for inserts, on the control panel for stoves, and on fireplaces the controls are mounted on or under the bottom louvers) which turns the blower on and off and allows you to adjust its speed. In addition to the switch, the blower is usually hooked up to a thermostat, so that it only operates within a predetermined temperature range. The advantage is that the blower will never blow cool air, even if you leave it on after you turn off your unit. Once the fireplace, stove or insert cools down to a certain temperature, the thermostat will shut off the blower. Inversely the blower will not turn on till the unit warms up.

Do gas fireplaces and stoves and inserts require AC power to work?
All models do require AC power for the blower to work, but do not need AC power for the fire. So if there is a power outage you can still use your unit.

How do I control my fireplace or stove?
There are several ways of controlling your gas insert, stove or fireplace. The standard method is with the on/off switch that comes standard with every unit. Another method is to have a remote control, which allows you to operate your unit from the comfort of your couch or lounge chair. The final method is to hook up your unit to a on & off wall switch, or thermostat and let it run itself according to the desired room temperature.

Why do most gas fireplaces have standing pilots?
Most gas fireplaces use a standing pilot ignition system, just like a gas water heater. This system operates with a pilot light so there is always a flame to ignite the gas. The pilot light also generates the power needed to operate the valve, so that if the pilot light gets blown out accidentally, the valve shuts off and the gas flow stops. The pilot light feature makes operation both easy and safe.

Can I shut the pilot off in the summer?
It's not necessary, but not a bad idea from an energy savings standpoint. Just remember to relight it before you want to use the appliance for the first time in the fall.
