Vent Free Ventless Gas Log Fireplaces
Are Vent Free Ventless Gas Logs the Right Solution for Your Home?
When you shop for vent free gas logs you'll find there are two basic types, gas logs that vent to the outside just like a wood burning fireplace and vent free ventless gas logs that are not vented at all.
Burning gas or wood produces carbon monoxide, a
potentially lethal gas, so you might wonder how a fireplace can be
safely used without venting its wastes to the outside. vent free
ventless gas logs
are designed to produce a very hot flame that results in nearly complete
fuel combustion, decreasing the levels of carbon monoxide and soot that
are produced by other gas logs.
Vent Free Ventless gas logs are always equipped with an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS), which is designed to turn off the gas before carbon monoxide reaches a dangerous level in the room.
It's a good idea to install one or more carbon monoxide detectors in your home, no matter what type of fuel-burning appliance you have. Detectors are an inexpensive way to put your mind at ease about carbon monoxide levels.
Where Can Vent Free Ventless Gas Logs Be Installed?
Vent Free Ventless gas logs can be housed in a masonry fireplace or in special vent free ventless fireboxes made to resemble a hearth. Most all states and municipalities approve of vent free ventless gas log products. For self assurance, call your local building or code office before purchasing a vent free or ventless gas log product. The link following is our latest map of states that have approved the use of vent free ventless gas logs and vent free ventless gas fireplaces.
How to clean the ODS Pilot Assembly?
There are many ways to clean the ODS pilot assembly. The link provided will give instruction on cleaning pilot assemblies.
If Your Vent Free Ventless Gas Logs Create Moisture
Water is another byproduct of combustion. If you have vented ceramic gas logs, most of the moisture escapes out the vent, but when you use vent free ventless gas logs the extra moisture enters your home. That can be a plus for many homes during dry winter months, but if your home is tightly insulated, or you have a humidifier, the excess moisture might show up as condensation on cold windows. A dehumidifier in the room should eliminate excess moisture that could accumulate.
Vented Ceramic Gas Fireplace Logs / Single Opening / See-Thru 2 Sided Peninsula gas fire log models
Millions
of vented ceramic gas logs are in use in vented gas fireplaces across the US. These tried and
true ceramic vented gas log sets have been sold for 20 years or more, and are still the
most popular type. They are available in lengths from 12” to over 60”
(that’s a big fireplace !). Vented gas ceramic logs are the most realistic wood fire
substitute made, and are available in different styles and finishes
which resemble oak, birch, hickory and many other wood species. This
realistic beauty comes at a price; vented gas logs are also the least
efficient of the three types. They consume from 50,000 to 90,000 BTU/HR
of Gas. The efficiency is rather low, meaning that only 10% to 20% of this heat
is returned to the home. The rest goes up the chimney, much like your
old wood fire did.
Technically speaking, the reason Vented Gas Logs look so good is they intentionally burn the Gas “dirty”. A dirty gas flame is a yellow flame...which simulates wood very well. The glowing embers found on most of these vented gas log sets add to the charm and realism. The Vented Gas Log Sets are also the most flexible - logs can be moved around and repositioned, remote controls and wall switches are available and additional logs, embers, branches and pine cones can be added. If you are looking for the most realistic fire, and don’t have a heating problem in the room or in your home, then the Vented Gas Ceramic Logs may be a good option for you.
Some newer vented gas log sets have been upgraded to use less gas than the standard models and certain brands actually produce noticeable radiant heat into the home. The Monessen Duzy series and Wildfire series return up to 20% heating efficiency.

Vented Gas Log Inserts - Ceramic Fireplace Logs - Fireplace Gas Logs
No fuss, no muss – a convenient choice
Modern
gas fireplace inserts are an increasingly attractive hearth
option for most homeowners. There are a wide variety of
styles, ranging from sleek, modern and sophisticated to
quaint old-fashioned or traditional designs. They have the
charm of a ‘real' wood-burning fireplace along with the
convenience of natural gas or propane. Gas fireplace mantels
in oak, cherry and other fine woods are also available to
complement your gas fireplace.
The most attractive characteristic of a gas log fireplace is its “instant-on” ability. There are those who love the experience of chopping kindling, building a small pile on some paper, and painstakingly lighting a wood fire – but for the rest of us, an instantly warm gas log fireplace allows the enjoyment of dancing flames on our own schedule.
Vented
Ceramic Gas
fireplace logs are gas fireplace inserts that burn
brightly through glass fireplace doors or screens. These
gas log inserts can be turned on and off just as quickly and easily
as a complete gas fireplace and they allow the use of your
existing fireplace with minimal modification. Most gas
fireplaces require electricity in order to automatically
ignite. However, many come with the ability to manually
start the fire with a match or other source of ignition in
case of power outages. Although such operation comes with
greater risks, it can be a lifesaver in a power outage or
emergency scenario.
Gas fireplaces are available for recessed or wall mounted installation, which means that they can be installed as a retrofit in a traditional fireplace enclosure, or in some cases even installed ON a wall with minimal penetration. This can be extremely important in some applications, such as apartment installations where space is at a premium, and cutting large chunks out of walls may not be an acceptable option. Gas fireplaces are so small and modular that some are even approved for installation in mobile homes.
Gas
log fireplace inserts are available in either vented or ventless
gas log models. Vented gas log insert models use either a traditional chimney/flue
or else a purpose-built vent pipe, while ventless gas log models
would be more accurately termed “room-vented”. They require
no special venting, which means that they can be installed
in apartments or other locations where outside ventilation
simply isn't a choice. As well, since there are no hot gases
escaping through the chimney, maximum heat radiates into the
room. Conversely, any gases which are released go into the
room in which the ventless gas fireplace log is located, which makes ventless
gas fireplace log inserts a
questionable choice for some extremely airtight homes. However,
ventless gas fireplace logs are completely safe and healthy as long
as your home has adequate air exchange in place – ask your
installer if you have any questions about your home's
air-replacement ability.
