Monessen Charred Timber Vent Free Gas LogThe choices for a Vent Free gas fireplace log or Vented gas fireplace log insert has never been larger.  With more innovative designs available in Natural Gas and Propane Gas, you can achieve the look of a vented gas fire log and still retain the heat produced by 99.9% efficient vent free gas log technology.

All of the vent free gas fireplace logs that we sell come equipped with an ODS safety pilot system, piezo ignition, and have been tested and approved by AGA/CSA.  (These gas log heaters comply with ANSI Z21.11.2-2001 Unvented Heaters and also complies with ANSI Z21.60-2000 Decorative Vented Appliances for Solid Fuel Burning Fireplaces.)

Vented gas fireplace logs have a flame similar to a real wood-burning fire, these units must be used within fully functioning wood burning fireplaces with working chimneys. These logs need virtually the same ventilation as standard wood burning logs and must be used with the damper in the open position.

Vented ceramic gas fireplace logs have many control options such as a simple match light, safety pilot, millivolt "Remote Ready), hi/lo modulating "Remote Ready", and Electronic Ignition systems.  Most vented ceramic gas fireplace logs can product heat up to about 25,000 Btu's and are set up to produce big flames, great look, and some heat.

Vent Free Ventless Gas Log Fireplaces

Are Vent Free Ventless Gas Logs the Right Solution for Your Home?

When you shop for vent free gas logs you'll find there are two basic types, gas logs that vent to the outside just like a wood burning fireplace and vent free ventless gas logs that are not vented at all.

Burning gas or wood produces carbon monoxide, a potentially lethal gas, so you might wonder how a fireplace can be safely used without venting its wastes to the outside. vent free ventless gas logs are designed to produce a very hot flame that results in nearly complete fuel combustion, decreasing the levels of carbon monoxide and soot that are produced by other gas logs.

Vent Free Ventless gas logs are always equipped with an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS), which is designed to turn off the gas before carbon monoxide reaches a dangerous level in the room.

It's a good idea to install one or more carbon monoxide detectors in your home, no matter what type of fuel-burning appliance you have.  Detectors are an inexpensive way to put your mind at ease about carbon monoxide levels.

Where Can Vent Free Ventless Gas Logs Be Installed?

Vent Free Ventless gas logs can be housed in a masonry fireplace or in special vent free ventless fireboxes made to resemble a hearth.  Most all states and municipalities approve of vent free ventless gas log products.  For self assurance, call your local building or code office before purchasing a vent free or ventless gas log product.  The link following is our latest map of states that have approved the use of vent free ventless gas logs and vent free ventless gas fireplaces.

How to clean the ODS Pilot Assembly?

There are many ways to clean the ODS pilot assembly.  The link provided will give instruction on cleaning pilot assemblies.

If Your Vent Free Ventless Gas Logs Create Moisture

Water is another byproduct of combustion. If you have vented ceramic gas logs, most of the moisture escapes out the vent, but when you use vent free ventless gas logs the extra moisture enters your home. That can be a plus for many homes during dry winter months, but if your home is tightly insulated, or you have a humidifier, the excess moisture might show up as condensation on cold windows.  A dehumidifier in the room should eliminate excess moisture that could accumulate.

Vented Ceramic Gas Fireplace Logs / Single Opening / See-Thru 2 Sided Peninsula gas fire log models

Millions of vented ceramic gas logs are in use in vented gas fireplaces across the US. These tried and true ceramic vented gas log sets have been sold for 20 years or more, and are still the most popular type. They are available in lengths from 12” to over 60” (that’s a big fireplace !). Vented gas ceramic logs are the most realistic wood fire substitute made, and are available in different styles and finishes which resemble oak, birch, hickory and many other wood species. This realistic beauty comes at a price; vented gas logs are also the least efficient of the three types. They consume from 50,000 to 90,000 BTU/HR of Gas. The efficiency is rather low, meaning that only 10% to 20% of this heat is returned to the home. The rest goes up the chimney, much like your old wood fire did.

Technically speaking, the reason Vented Gas Logs look so good is they intentionally burn the Gas “dirty”. A dirty gas flame is a yellow flame...which simulates wood very well. The glowing embers found on most of these vented gas log sets add to the charm and realism. The Vented Gas Log Sets are also the most flexible - logs can be moved around and repositioned, remote controls and wall switches are available and additional logs, embers, branches and pine cones can be added. If you are looking for the most realistic fire, and don’t have a heating problem in the room or in your home, then the Vented Gas Ceramic Logs may be a good option for you.

Some newer vented gas log sets have been upgraded to use less gas than the standard models and certain brands actually produce noticeable radiant heat into the home.  The Monessen Duzy series and Wildfire series return up to 20% heating efficiency.

Vented Gas Log Inserts - Ceramic Fireplace Logs - Fireplace Gas Logs

No fuss, no muss – a convenient choice

Modern gas fireplace inserts are an increasingly attractive hearth option for most homeowners. There are a wide variety of styles, ranging from sleek, modern and sophisticated to quaint old-fashioned or traditional designs. They have the charm of a ‘real' wood-burning fireplace along with the convenience of natural gas or propane. Gas fireplace mantels in oak, cherry and other fine woods are also available to complement your gas fireplace.

The most attractive characteristic of a gas log fireplace is its “instant-on” ability. There are those who love the experience of chopping kindling, building a small pile on some paper, and painstakingly lighting a wood fire – but for the rest of us, an instantly warm gas log fireplace allows the enjoyment of dancing flames on our own schedule.

Vented Ceramic Gas fireplace logs are gas fireplace inserts that burn brightly through glass fireplace doors or screens. These gas log inserts can be turned on and off just as quickly and easily as a complete gas fireplace and they allow the use of your existing fireplace with minimal modification. Most gas fireplaces require electricity in order to automatically ignite. However, many come with the ability to manually start the fire with a match or other source of ignition in case of power outages. Although such operation comes with greater risks, it can be a lifesaver in a power outage or emergency scenario.

Gas fireplaces are available for recessed or wall mounted installation, which means that they can be installed as a retrofit in a traditional fireplace enclosure, or in some cases even installed ON a wall with minimal penetration. This can be extremely important in some applications, such as apartment installations where space is at a premium, and cutting large chunks out of walls may not be an acceptable option. Gas fireplaces are so small and modular that some are even approved for installation in mobile homes.

Gas log fireplace inserts are available in either vented or ventless gas log models. Vented gas log insert models use either a traditional chimney/flue or else a purpose-built vent pipe, while ventless gas log models would be more accurately termed “room-vented”.  They require no special venting, which means that they can be installed in apartments or other locations where outside ventilation simply isn't a choice. As well, since there are no hot gases escaping through the chimney, maximum heat radiates into the room. Conversely, any gases which are released go into the room in which the ventless gas fireplace log is located, which makes ventless gas fireplace log inserts a questionable choice for some extremely airtight homes. However, ventless gas fireplace logs are completely safe and healthy as long as your home has adequate air exchange in place – ask your installer if you have any questions about your home's air-replacement ability.

A blazing gas log fireplace insert without the wood or mess!

Vented Ceramic Gas logs deliver the cozy ambience of a fire in the fireplace without any of the preparation, maintenance, and cleanup that real wood fires demand. They provide stunning realism and warmth, as well as safety features to put your mind at ease. You can add ceramic gas fireplace logs to an existing fireplace or installed in vent free ventless versions very inexpensively and can also be used as a back-up heating source during power failures because they require no electricity.

What do vented ceramic gas fireplace log inserts use for fuel?

Vented Vent Free or Ventless Gas fireplace logs use either natural gas or liquid propane. Natural gas fireplace log inserts are the most popular option and typically generate more heat than ceramic fireplace logs that use liquid propane, which are generally used only in places where natural gas is not available.

How are vented ceramic gas fireplace logs different from vent free ventless gas fire logs?

The primary difference is that vent free ventless gas fireplace logs can be operated with the chimney damper closed, which keeps significantly more heat in your home while vented ceramic gas fire logs operate with the damper open to produce a flame that looks more similar to a real wood fire flame. Basically, vent free ventless gas logs provide more warmth than ambiance and vented ceramic gas fireplace logs provide a more realistic flame with stronger ambient firelight.

How much does installation cost?

The cost of installing gas logs varies by the particular job and installer. While there is no standard cost for installing gas logs, it is highly recommended that you use only certified professionals to install gas logs. Check with your local fuel provider for a  list of qualified installers in your area.  Read our "Converting my woodburning fireplace to Gas".

Are vented ceramic gas fireplace logs expensive to operate?

Because they are 10% to 20% efficient, vented ceramic gas fireplace logs are generally quite expensive to operate.  A gas log's BTU (British Thermal Unit) output determines how much fuel it will use. Contact your local gas provider for current information regarding specific gas and operation costs.

Which produces more heat, vented gas fireplace logs or vent free ventless gas log inserts?

Because most of the heat generated by vented ceramic gas fireplace logs is lost through the open chimney damper, they are more ideal for ambient light and a realistic flame. Vent Free Ventless gas logs are much more efficient, and therefore use less energy to generate more heat in the home.

How do I determine the right size vented ceramic gas log for my fireplace?

Use your fireplace's measurements to help find gas logs that do not fit too tightly along the side and back walls or us our easy sizing guide to determine what vented gas log will best fit your existing fireplace.

Can I adjust the flame on vented ceramic gas logs?

Typically, gas logs do not have adjustable flames but some models with rotary control valve options allow you to regulate the flame.

How do I know that my vented gas fireplace log is safe?

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) maintains strict standards for many heating products, including vent free ventless gas logs. A gas log that complies with the ANSI standard Z 21.11.2 is considered safe for residential operation.

How are vented gas fireplace logs constructed?

Gas logs are made up of the burner and the fireproof "log" that conceals it. These logs are usually made of molded refractory cement, fired ceramic clay, or molded ceramic fibers.

What is the difference between standard and see-through vented ceramic gas fireplace logs?

Standard gas logs are for standard, front-view fireplaces. See-through style gas logs are specifically designed for multi-sided fireplaces. These gas logs have a special burner system that directs the fire in such a way that it looks appealing and natural from various angles.

Should I use a carbon monoxide detector in conjunction with a vented gas log?

Any energy source can produce carbon monoxide, which is why a detector is recommended in every home.

Do vented gas fireplace logs require any special maintenance?

Outside of periodic professional inspection of its gas lines, valves, connections, and pilot, gas logs require no particular maintenance to remain in proper working order.

If you wish to clean your gas logs, first make sure they are off and have cooled to room temperature. Brush gas logs with a soft bristled brush or duster to remove any dirt or dust. Do not remove gas logs from the burner or the fireplace and never use water or other solvents to clean gas logs.

Can I burn wood in my gas log fire?

Never attempt to supplement a gas log fire by adding any combustible material to it, including wood. Nor should you remove gas logs from the fireplace to burn wood. The additional heat created by burning wood can damage gas logs and void your warranty.

What are some optional controls for my vented gas fireplace log?

Base models of vented or vent free ventless gas logs include controls inside the fireplace to ignite the gas logs. Some models can be operated by remote control or wall switch while others can be controlled by thermostat or timer to increase efficiency.

What is the purpose of a safety pilot on a vented gas fireplace log?

A gas log safety pilot stops the flow of gas in the event that the pilot goes out or the normal flow of gas is irregular. This automatic shut-off valve prevents the buildup of gas in the home or stops the flow of gas to the gas log if the fire becomes too hot.

Should I shut off the pilot on my vented gas fireplace log during the summer?

It is not necessary to shut off your gas log pilot during summer months when your gas log is not in use but doing so may save money on fuel costs.

Do the embers around my vented gas fireplace log burn and will they ever need to be replaced?

The glowing accent embers that complete the look of many gas logs do not actually burn and therefore do not need to be replaced. They are made of a mineral called rock wool that is organic and fireproof.
