What type of ignition method do you want for your Gas Fireplace or Log Insert?
Did you know you can choose how you want to light your gas log set or gas fireplace? Most gas log sets and gas fireplaces come with several different lighting options. Choose from one of the following options.

Match Light - Operate log set by hand. Place match or lighter in fireplace near log burner and turn on gas with the key valve already installed near your fireplace. Control the flame height by adjusting your key valve. (Least expensive; most common) (Not available for LPG / Propane gas models)

Manual Safety Pilot - Pilot Light can remain constantly lit and is operated by a control knob mounted on to the gas log burner. (Required for propane and available for natural gas; a bit more expensive)

Basic On/Off Remote - Pilot Light can remain constantly lit and is turned on and off by a remote control. Flame height can not be adjusted by remote control. (Convenient, more expensive)

Variable Flame Remote - Pilot Light can remain constantly lit and is completely operated by a remote control. With this, you can turn your log set on and off as well as adjust the flame height. (Most convenient, most expensive) (Can only be used with a variable flame height valve system)

There are four popular gas control types for gas fireplaces and gas logs.

Manual Control Valve - Manual control log sets are just that; manually controlled. You turn the burners on, and can adjust the flame height by a control knob on the gas appliance.
This adjusting ability is usually very desirable in a vented log, because the action of a vented log is wider and has more of a range of flame height to adjust. (No Standing Pilot) (NG Only) -
Safety Pilot Control Valve - The safety pilot control is a manual control valve with a standing pilot. You turn the burners on, and can adjust the flame height by a single control knob on the log set. On an unvented appliance, you manually adjust the flame height in order to control temperature in the room. (Minimum requirement for LPG or Propane gas)

Millivolt Control Valve -
Use of a wall-mounted or hand held thermostat cycles the gas on and off, in order to maintain temperature. These are very popular control for logs. Not too expensive, good accessories available. Flame height is adjusted by turning a knob on the gas appliance only. They can also be used manually. Millivolt (or remote-ready) offers the most overall flexibility as more different types of remote units and switches are available than for any other gas system.
Variable Control Valve -
A Hi/Lo valve control
offers flame height control by remote only and usually includes
the proper remote. You systematically depress and release the
"on/hi" switch on a hand held remote (or remote receiver box)
until the flame reaches the desired height. If you want to turn
the log set off, you depress and release the "off/lo" switch
until the flame turns off. You cannot easily control the log set
manually, but it can be done. It does, however, allow flame
height control via remote.
Electronic Ignition Control Valve - Electronic ignition valve systems are the latest technology. These types of systems turn the gas on and off electronically and do not have a standing safety pilot. There is no wasted gas or noise from a gas pilot when the logs are not burning. This is the most expensive type of system, but the most desired. Most electronic ignition systems are packaged with a remote control.

1) Are remote
controls available only with gas
fireplaces?
Electric fireplaces and
gas logs can also come with remote
controls.
2) Can you
buy a remote that will work on any
gas/electric fireplace?
You need to buy a model
with a remote from the start.
There are universal remote controls that
work with most fireplaces. Be sure
and get one compatible with your
fireplace gas valve.
3) What can
fireplace remotes do exactly?
They range from the simple turning
on and off a fireplace to options such
as adjusting the fan setting, operating
as a remote thermostat, displaying the
room's temperature, and allowing for
timed automatic shut off of the
fireplace or gas log.
4) How do
remotes access the fireplace controls?
While it may very from brand to
brand, most fireplace remotes transmit
radio signals. This keeps it from
interfering with a television remote
(these usually use line of sight
infrared signals). The brightness of the
flames can make infrared a bad option
for fireplace remotes. Radio
frequency remote controls can be set so
more than one remote can be used in a
home.
5) What are
the perks to having a remote for the
fireplace?
Let's face it, between the remotes
for the DVD player, VCR, TV, stereo, and
light dimmer, there just aren't enough
remotes on your coffee table. Ok,
seriously, fireplace remotes are just a
convenience; they make a lot of sense,

bedroom and want to be able to flick it
off from bed.
